Introduction: With this first unit, students will be introduced to artists who “play” in nature. It will establish a strong link between nature as inspiration and nature as ephemeral - and art as ephemeral. Most importantly, it will allow students to connect and play with art and nature.
Description: Students will be introduced to artists Andy Goldsworthy and Jim Denevan. We will discuss the idea of ephemeral and how it applies to their work. We will talk about the different shapes and patterns these artists use, how these are found in nature, and why these artists choose to work the in the medium they do.
We will talk about their own experiences - building sandcastles, rock stacking by the mountain creeks, using sticks and leaves, etc.
We will participate in a “nature walk” in which we explore the school grounds and work in small groups at stations where they use different materials to create a design. (rocks, sticks, leaves, acorns). Each will be photographed and shared with the class.
As a final project, students will sketch a design idea of their own material of choice and create this in their space or at a park, and they will share a photo of their individual piece with the class.
Assessment: Formative assessment will be through discussion - including post “nature walk” discussion and sharing. Summative will be through the evaluation of the final individual project with a collaborative rubric.
