Introduction: With this lesson, we will take advantage of our close proximity to the Langston Hughes Library and the Riggio-Lynch Interfaith Chapel which were both designed by Maya Lin and are located on the Haley Farm in Clinton, TN. (Formerly owned by Alex Haley, author of Roots.)
Description: Students will be introduced to the work of artist Maya Lin. We will discuss the idea of “ephemeral” and how it applies to her work. While she is of course known for her memorials and architecture, her installations and earthworks such as Wave Field should be considered - just asSpiral Jetty by Robert Smithson - there is the topic of preservation versus the natural process of nature. Also, we can discuss how Lin uses play and draws from nature to inspire her works.
Students will learn about Zen gardens and their meanings and the culture that surrounds this practice. And the purpose of process and reflection in art. Also, the spiritual freedom that is implied in meditation. This will blend well with the visit to Haley Farm, experiencing the chapel and library - also symbols of freedom and faith.
As a final project, students will decide whether they wish to create a miniature zen garden or a moss terrarium, inspired by the examples we studied. They will share their creations with the class.
Assessment: Formative assessment will be through discussion. Summative will be through design and explanation of their mini zen or moss gardens.
