Narrative Statement
I am an artist, writer, designer, and student. As an artist, my focus is on southern vernacular architecture and landscape. I find these simple structures and basic landscapes sublime.
As a freelance writer, I have focused on subject matter such as architecture and design in regional magazines. With each article, I value interviewing people about projects they care about. Bringing their passion and pride to the printed page is always a great privilege to me as a writer.
As a graphic designer, I have had the fortune to work with large corporations and very small businesses. I have found great fulfillment in helping others to accomplish goals for their businesses. I am a strong believer in the entrepreneurial spirit and hope to encourage others to take big leaps.
Currently, I am a graduate student, working to complete a M.A. in Art Education with the University of Florida. I hope to become an art educator and advocate for art education. I believe my professional experience as well as my experiences as a mother have deeply influenced and enriched what I have to offer and share with students.
I completed my M.A. in Art History at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2002. My thesis was on Picasso’s variations of the Old Masters. My B.A. in Journalism/Mass Communication and Art is from Samford University.

Creative & Research Biography
As an artist I explore southern vernacular architecture and landscapes on my canvases. I am haunted by the simple structure of dogtrot house, a ghost of the past, and yet so simple it becomes almost modern and abstract. In becoming an art educator, I hope to encourage creativity and play as well as to build a lifelong connection between the student and art and the humanities. I feel these aspects are undervalued in our current educational system. As a scholar, I wish to deepen my understanding of art education and to further underscore its value through advocacy.
